So, DA tells me to tell you about myself in this box here. I suppose if you read my comics and read the "Devious Info" box below, you should pretty much know all there is to know.

So here's an update! Finally!

Mon May 4, 2009, 9:13 PM
So I made a new sketchbook today. I'm not entirely sure why. See, ever since I got my Cintiq, I've drawn maybe one thing on paper.

Part of me misses it, but another part of me really doesn't. I think the work I do in Manga Studio is far beyond what I was doing on paper. I know some people say that digital art isn't as good because it's "easier," and to that I say go to hell. Working with my Cintiq isn't easier than working with pens on paper. Well, for me at least. I don't think that art skill is inherent, or that you're born with it. I think you have to work hard to get good. I've been drawing as long as I can remember, and I know I've gotten to the level that I am now because I have always been drawing, not because I am genetically predisposed to be able to do it.

So, here at my desk I have stacks of unused computer paper waiting to be drawn on, as well as a new home made sketchbook ready for some work. But I don't know if I will use them. I have already planned to give my dad my drawing table, as I think he would use it more than I am at the moment.

Does this mean I am going to be one of those hack digital artists? Maybe. It certainly feels that way. Everytime this subject has ever come up in the past, I always am given the advice "go with what feels comfortable." And man, the Cintiq is like an old, comfortable hoodie.

But I will keep this sketchbook. I made it with frame matting for the covers and it turned out really nicely. i've given most of the rest I have away, but I'll hang onto this one. Maybe I'll use it from time to time. But for now, I'm happy filling up pages in my sketchbook that I created in Manga Studio.

----------------------------------

A while back, I posted asking if anyone was interested in commissions. I had two replies, and both of them ended up turning into art trades. So I guess that means commissions are fine, but art trades are better. I wouldn't know what to charge fairly for my art, so I think trades are pretty good.

Yeah, that's that.

----------------------------------

I just wanted to also throw out a big thank you to everyone that reads Egomaniac. I know I'm awful with responses, but rest assured I will respond to your comments! (Well, unless it's just something like "XD" or "ha!" I never know what to say to that, haha.) I've been working on it since September '07, and I still am having fun with it, so I'd say that's pretty good. I think not giving myself a deadline is a good thing.

Not that the Friday deadline with Think Tank killed it for me, because I was never late there, but ehhh. I dunno what I mean.

So yes! Thank you for reading! It always makes me feel very humbled and shocked that people out there check out my work and think it's funny. Its definitely an honor, you guys.

-------------------------------------

Just a quick question. I was looking through my old comics, and I saw that I always used to give characters eye color, then I switched over to the black "shark's eyes." Do you have a preference? Honestly, I went to the shark eyes because it was easier than keeping track of everyone's eye colors. I'm green, Liz is brown and then iono. I plan on sticking with the shark eyes, but I'm just curious.

Part of me wants to go back to the rounder, cartoony eyes I did that one time. I sometimes wish that I was a little bit cartoonier.

  • *raises hand* I'll join the PJ love fest. Seriously, thanks for the add, you've got some good strips here (do you ever post them on PJ? I never see them, but I don't spend tons of time there).
    Thanks!

Yeah, I do post them there, but I only post art in my sketch blog, really. (It's called "I make no promises: The art of Bob Dahlstrom.)

I got into it once with Terry about posting my comics on the site, so I pretty much just stick with the one forum now for art, heh.
